What image comes to mind when you think of Egypt? Desert, maybe? What was life like for Israel in Egypt before they were enslaved? There is so much history and background to the Exodus story that must be addressed upfront if we're to understand how and why the story plays out the way it does. The very first line in the book indicates this isn't a stand alone tale, but the result of everything that came before it - especially the epic of Joseph and how Israel was brought to Egypt to begin with. I think we'll come to find out that Israel was already assimilating to the story of Egypt...
